Google Business Profile: a step-by-step setup guide for small businesses

Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the map results and on the right-hand side of Google when someone searches for your business. It is free, and it is one of the most important things you can do for local SEO.

1. Create or claim your profile

Search for your business name while signed in to a Google account. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one at google.com/business.

2. Choose your type: storefront or service area

If customers visit you, you are a storefront. If you travel to customers or work from home, set up a service-area business. You can hide your address and show the areas you serve instead, which is the right choice if you work from home.

3. Pick the right categories

Your main category matters most. Choose the one that best describes what you do, then add a few secondary ones.

4. Fill in everything

  • Business name exactly as you use it in real life
  • Phone number and website
  • Opening hours
  • A short, honest description
  • Your services

5. Add real photos

Photos of your work, your team and your premises build trust. Add new ones regularly.

6. Verify

Google will ask you to verify, usually by phone, email, text or video. Until you do, your profile will not show properly.

7. Collect and answer reviews

Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every one. Do not buy reviews or offer rewards for them.
