Local SEO basics: how to show up when customers search nearby

When someone searches for a plumber, a florist or a lighting installer, Google often shows a map with three local businesses at the top. Getting into that group can matter more than ranking in the regular results below it. Here is where to start.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important local SEO asset. Make sure your business name, address, phone number, opening hours and categories are correct, and add real photos.

2. Keep your details identical everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should match across your website, social profiles and directories. Inconsistencies confuse search engines.

3. Ask for reviews

Reviews help rankings and persuade customers. Ask happy customers directly, make it easy with a link, and reply to every review, good or bad.

4. Build pages for the places you serve

If you cover several towns, give each its own useful page rather than listing them all in one paragraph. Write about the real work you do there.

5. Make the site fast on phones

Most local searches happen on mobile. A slow, awkward site loses customers before they call.
